Build from where you are
Adults are advised to strengthen all major muscle groups on at least two days a week, alongside aerobic activity. Start at a manageable level and build gradually.
02 / EXPLORE THE MOVEMENTS
Two ways to begin.
These are introductory examples, not a complete full-body programme. Follow the linked technique guidance and choose a routine appropriate for you.
01
Sit-to-stand
A familiar movement for your legs.
Use a solid chair without wheels that will not slide. Place your feet flat on the floor.
Sit near the front, feet about hip-width apart. Lean slightly forward and stand slowly using your legs.
Sit down with control. Use your hands to guide the return if needed.
The NHS example suggests aiming for five repetitions. Choose a suitable starting amount; this is not a test.
02
Wall push-up
An introductory upper-body exercise.
Stand about an arm's length from a wall, palms at chest height and fingers pointing up.
Keep your back straight and elbows by your sides as you slowly bend your arms toward the wall.
Press back with control.
NHS guidance suggests 3 sets of 5–10 repetitions. Build up slowly; choose an amount appropriate for you rather than forcing a target.
Choose a routine appropriate for you using trusted guidance. Give it two realistic times and a backup.
